product description

filson’s commercial-strength rugged twill from british millerain is a 2-ply through three-ply twill with awesome resistance to abrasion and put on. It’s lightly waxed, so your valuables live dry. The leather-based handles and straps are cut, burnished and side-dyed in our seattle factory from bridle leather-based hides vegetable-tanned by pennsylvania’s iconic wickett & craig. Every hide is slowly steeped in a special bark-tannin solution, with tallows and waxes “hot-filled” into it at some point of the very last ranges. This eco-friendly tanning process transforms cowhide into long lasting, pliable leather suitable for horse tack, saddlery, as well as filson briefcases. The heavy-gauge brass zipper is rustproof, surely indestructible, and strengthened with bridle leather. All of this is stitched collectively with heavy-duty, cotton-wrapped polyester thread, to make certain a briefcase in order to offer a long time of unfailing sturdiness.

I bought this bag several years ago and have used it daily, carrying my laptop back and forth from work. About a year ago the patch that attaches the shoulder strap to the bag came unsewn while I was carrying it and the buckle flew up and hit me in the mouth, drawing some blood. Clearly a workmanship defect – the other side is still in fine shape. Not a big deal, I thought, because I trusted in the Filson promise. However, when I brought the bag to the flagship store I was told it would be 4-6 weeks to make the 15 minute repair. I explained that I use the bag daily, and asked if I could have a loaner in the interim. Was told no. Asked if I could trade for a lower priced bag. Was told no. Since my only other option at that point was to buy a new bag for the 4-6 weeks it would take to repair, I went home and tried to work the issue through with customer service. After a lengthy chat they ultimately offered a week for the repair, but that would require me to make a lengthy trip back to the store. Filson leads with a quote from their founder about how a customer’s satisfaction is the sole purpose. Despite making every reasonable effort to get satisfaction, the new owners have failed to deliver on that original promiseRead more

Update:The shoulder strap has a sliding, padded thing intended to be used as cushion on your shoulder when carrying. I was complaining about this specific thing being too slippery. I pushed this out of the way and just use the 1/2” strap and it’s solved the issue. Read it on another thread. Too dumb to figure that out on my own apparently. After 20+ years with my black, soft leather, briefcase it was time to start looking for a replacement. I searched for a long time, looked at many bags in stores and on the line. The bags I looked at ranged in price from $60-$1,000. I was looking for something that fit my 15″ laptop, was durable, made in the USA, and had good reviews.I ended up purchasing the tan Filson Rugged Twill Original Briefcase. I wasn’t sure if I should buy this version vs. the Rugged Twill Padded Computer Bag. I wasn’t certain the ‘original briefcase’ would have enough space in it vs. the padded computer bag. Ends up the original briefcase has plenty of space. My bulky carrying case that holds my 15″ MacBook Pro easily slides into the bag, and leave plenty of space with the other 2 inside pockets. The 2 outside pockets are a little tight as far as being able to reach your hand in there, pull the pocket open, and see what you’re looking for, but all in all it is a solid bag. I’ve been carrying this for about 3 months. The Con:I personally prefer to carry my bag using the shoulder strap. I wear a suit, so I do not wear the shoulder strap across my body (because I don’t want to mess up my clothes). The shoulder strap for this bag is made of saddle-grade Bridle leather–in case you don’t know what that means, it’s material that will apparently seamlessly slide off of all other known materials. The bag immediately slips off of my shoulder when carrying it, and it’s pretty frustrating. The strap has no tacky properties in any way, so I don’t understand how it’s ever going to not slide off of my shoulder.if you have any suggestions on what I can do to help with that problem I would love to hear!Other than the shoulder strap issue, this is clearly a well-crafted bag that should easily outlast my prior briefcase.Read more
